Wolfenstein 3D on the arcade cabinet
The arcade cabinet in your lab can run Wolfenstein 3D, the 1992 one, from the game's files on your own PC. The game never ships the files: you download them, you link them, the cabinet plays them. It works the same way as DOOM on the cabinet.
The files
Wolfenstein 3D keeps its levels, sounds and art in eight files. The ones to use are the free shareware episode id Software and Apogee released in 1992, Escape from Wolfenstein, ten levels. The shareware archive may be passed around unmodified, so here it is, exactly as it was:
Save it somewhere you can find again. You do not unpack it: the cabinet does that in your browser. If you own the full game, pick its eight .WL6 files together instead; the cabinet names the game it finds.
In the game
- Fit the RA-4 Multi-Game Motherboard. The vendor sells it on the ARCADE shelf; it arrives as a crate. Switch the cabinet off (tap it, POWER) and fit it under INSIDE THE CABINET.
- Fit the Wolfenstein Uplink Module. Same shelf, same way. It only goes in once the RA-4 is there. The Doom Uplink can sit beside it.
- Link your Wolfenstein 3D files. Tap the cabinet, find WOLFENSTEIN 3D, press LINK YOUR WOLFENSTEIN FILES and pick the archive you downloaded. It is unpacked and kept in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
- Power on, drop a quarter. INSERT COIN · WOLFENSTEIN 3D, like any other game on the cabinet.
Controls
W and S move, A and D strafe, the arrow keys turn, the mouse turns and its left button fires, Space fires, E opens doors, Shift runs. No Ctrl or Alt: a browser keeps those for itself. Esc opens the game's own menu, as it always did. Quit in that menu, then Y, leaves the cabinet; WALK AWAY under the screen does the same at once.
Wolfenstein 3D on the cabinet is played for its own sake: no scores, medals or Chips come from it. The engine is ECWolf, free software under the GPL; its licences ship beside it.
